MIRI (May 10): Miri will mark its 20th anniversary with a vibrant ten-night community carnival, showcasing a fusion of food, music and culture.

The celebration, themed ‘Multiracial Unity’, will be taking place at Miri City Fan from May 16 to 25, running from 6pm to 11pm daily.

The grand opening ceremony, scheduled this May 17, will be declared open by the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

At a press conference here yesterday, Mayor Adam Yii emphasised the carnival as being ‘more than just a celebration’.

“It’s a tribute to the city’s remarkable journey over the past two decades.

“Miri has evolved into a vibrant, progressive, and inclusive city,” he said, adding that the celebration should reflect the community’s commitment to unity and shared progress.

The event will feature a diverse lineup of performances and activities, including international food stalls, cultural showcases, and community-based programmes.

Scheduled performers include Wany Hasrita, Baby Shima, Vanessa Reynauld, Justin Ng, Donny Lang, and Kate Chan.

“We warmly invite all Mirians and visitors to join us in making unforgettable memories together,” said Yii, extending his gratitude to the organising teams, sponsors, partners, and volunteers for their dedication behind the scenes.

“Miri is what it is today because of its people. Let us come together to celebrate what makes this city truly special.”

Meanwhile, Councillor Leslie Lau, who was also present at the press conference, advised the public to plan their travel in advance due to expected traffic congestion throughout the carnival period.

The main drop-off and entrance point for the public would be located at the fountain near the public swimming pool.
Also in attendance was Miri City Council acting secretary Abdul Rahman Taupek.
