MIRI (Nov 2): Miri has great potential to become one of Sarawak’s leading health and wellness tourism hubs, said Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.

Yii, who is also Pujut assemblyman, said the city’s rich natural environment, clean air and peaceful lifestyle make it an ideal destination not only for local residents but also for visitors who value physical, mental and emotional well-being.

“This aligns perfectly with Sarawak’s vision to become a holistic, people-first medical tourism destination and the Miri City Council (MCC) is proud to support any community-based initiatives that contribute to this broader goal,” he said when officiating at the Walk With Love: Community Wellness and Inclusive Health Tourism Event at Bulatan Park here today.

As a city that champions the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Yii said the MCC places strong emphasis on Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).

He also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, particularly its Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting, for their continuous support of initiatives that blend wellness, tourism and community development.

Commenting on the event, Yii commended the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri branch and its Sunflower Centre sub-committee for successfully organising the meaningful programme, which aims to raise funds for the therapy and rehabilitation of special needs children here.

“Today, we are not just taking a walk in the park — we are walking with purpose, with compassion and most importantly, with love,” Yii said.

He pointed out that the event embodies the essence of a caring and connected society by promoting inclusivity, wellness and social responsibility.

“This is the kind of partnership we want to see more of, where non-governmental organisations (NGOs), government agencies and the private sector come together to make a real difference in people’s lives,” he said.

About 350 people, including children with special needs and their parents, took part in the walk.

Also present were Miri MP Chiew Choon Man and organising chairlady Jocelyn Hii.
