KUCHING – Miri City Council (MCC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) Sarawak organized the Sarawak Local Authority (PBT) Rating and Valuation Workshop for the year 2026 at Hotel 56, Kuching on 28-29 July 2026. This was the second time such a workshop organized by MCC and MPHLG following the success of organizing the same workshop last year. The workshop was organized by the Rating, Valuation and Strata Management Division, MCC with collaboration with the Rating, Valuation and Strata Management Section, MPHLG.
This workshop is a platform for learning sessions and sharing best practices related to Valuation, Rating and Recovery of outstanding rates works for Rateables Properties in Sarawak. The speakers consist of officers from PBTs who are directly involved in their respective fields. This is in line with the implementation of the current legislation and procedures adopted in Sarawak.
The workshop was officiated by YBhg. Datu Elizabeth Loh, Permanent Secretary of MPHLG. In her opening speech, she stressed that the issue of unsatisfactory assessment rates collection has an impact on the increase in the amount of arrears of assessment rates. It is an issue that often receives attention from the Cabinet Special Committee (CABCOM) established under the Sarawak Integrity and Ombudsman Unit (UNIONS). The low amount of assessment rates collection can have a great impact on the effectiveness of PBTs in covering administrative costs and services in their respective areas of responsibility. She also hopes that through organizing workshops like this, staff in Sarawak PBTs will be more exposed to and understand rating-related work, especially involving recovery of assessment rates collection. In addition, she hopes that through several sessions of sharing knowledge and experience with speakers and other participants, participants can take this opportunity to ask questions directly regarding the issues faced so that they can be practiced in their respective PBTs.
Also present at the event were Mdm. Salena binti Sulaiman, MPHLG Valuation Officer and Mdm. Monica binti Lenya, MCC City Valuation Officer. A total of 56 participants attended the session, consisting of staff from all over Sarawak's local government.
