MIRI, 10 Nov: The renovation works on the old Miri City Council (MBM) building have now reached 85 percent completion as preparations are underway to house the Fudan (SEA) Integrative Medicine Institute, Miri City Campus, which is expected to begin operations early next year.
Sarawak Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, said the high-technology research centre is a collaborative project between the Sarawak Government and Fudan University, China, aimed at positioning Miri as a regional hub for AI-based health innovation.
“This building is currently undergoing renovation to accommodate two main components — the ground floor will house the AI Medical Experience Centre, while the upper floor will become the Fudan University Joint Research Centre,” he said during a press conference held in conjunction with a site visit to the proposed research centre here today.
He added that the AI medical experience centre is expected to be completed and begin operations in early 2026, while the entire research centre is projected to be fully completed by the first quarter of 2026.
“When operational, this centre will introduce ‘AI Doctor’ technology and various smart medical applications developed by Fudan University, giving the Miri community the opportunity to experience AI-based healthcare services firsthand,” he said.
According to him, the project will not only improve public healthcare standards but also create new job opportunities, attract international investment, and position Miri as a regional smart health hub.
“This development is in line with the vision of transforming Miri into a smart city based on a healthy community, while strengthening international cooperation between Sarawak and China in the fields of medicine and technology,” he explained. — TVS
