1882
Early Miri Settlement
Miri was originally a small fishing village before the discovery of oil attracted settlers.
10 August 1910
Commercial Oil Discovery
Shell successfully drilled the first oil well at Bukit Canada, known as Miri Well No.1.
1933 – 1955
Miri Municipal Board
Established under Municipal Order Enactment No. M-7, 1933 to manage municipal affairs.
1956 – 1960
Miri Town Council
Reformed on 1 January 1956 and fully responsible for local administration and finances.
1961 – 1980
Miri District Council
Status changed to accommodate the administrative needs of a larger area.
6 Nov 1981 – 19 May 2005
Miri Municipal Council
Upgraded in line with the restructuring of local government powers in Sarawak.
20 May 2005 – Present
Miri City Council
Miri was declared a city, and the Miri City Council was officially established.
