Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-Laws, 1999 — By-law 28(2) Fails or neglects to cut, trim or maintain the vegetation on property likely to harbour pests or disease-bearing insects.

Larviciding

Definition

Controlling insect populations, commonly mosquitoes, by applying pesticides to aquatic breeding habitats to eliminate them in their larval stage.

Safety

When used according to product label instructions, larvicides do not harm people, pets, or the environment. Available in tablet, granule, or liquid form.

Coverage

Larviciding is conducted by the Council at commercial centres, places of worship, residential areas, markets, and hawker centres across Miri City.

Health Education

Promoting public awareness to prevent the transmission of vector-borne diseases by eliminating mosquito breeding and hiding places.

Stagnant water mosquito breeding
Stagnant Water (Breeding)

Destroy water bodies or containers likely to be breeding places for mosquitoes — tires, pots, gutters, and open drains.

Overgrown vegetation trimming
Vegetation (Hiding)

Cut, trim and maintain vegetation. Preferably ensure the first branch has a clearance of at least 2 feet from the ground.

Accumulated articles clutter
Accumulated Articles (Hiding)

Avoid accumulation or deposit of articles in a manner likely to create hiding or resting places for mosquitoes.

Fogging

Cold ULV fogging machine
Cold Fogging (ULV)

High pressure turns a water-based solution into tiny particles that disperse widely to reach and knock down adult mosquitoes.

Thermal fogging smoke outdoor
Thermal Fogging

Uses heat to vaporise a diesel-based fogging liquid, producing dense fog deployed in larger open areas for wider mosquito control coverage.

Important Mosquito Facts

Female Only

Only female mosquitoes bite humans to obtain a blood meal needed for egg development.

60–80 eggs

Three days after a blood meal, a female mosquito lays 60 to 80 eggs at a time.

7–10 days

Full life cycle: egg to larva to pupa to adult takes just 7–10 days.

14–30 days

A mosquito can live for 14 to 30 days, laying eggs multiple times in its lifetime.

11M+

One female with 4 blood meals in 3 months can result in over 11 million adult mosquitoes.
