MIRI (Jan 24): The rampant and illegal dumping of bulk waste has prompted the Miri City Council (MCC) to cease the operation of roll-on roll-off (Roro) bins in commercial areas here.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii clarified that this move does not mean the council is neglecting its core municipal responsibilities, including waste management services, as claimed by certain parties in a recent report.

“The council has, in fact, spent 46 per cent of its annual total revenue on waste management, septic tanks desludging, and street cleaning from time to time,” he told reporters after chairing MCC’s full council meeting earlier today.

According to Yii, the decision to withdraw Roro bin facilities from commercial areas, designated sites, and roadsides was due to the persistent misuse of the bins.

“The bins were meant for proper disposal of bulky household items, electrical and electronic waste but instead, they were illegally used to dump construction waste and debris, garden waste, as such,” he explained.

Yii also revealed that MCC had received complaints from nearby residents who requested the removal of the bins due to their unsightly appearance and unpleasant smell.

Even when the bins were relocated to alternative designated areas, issues persisted, such as the bins being burned or rubbish scattered around the sites, he added.

“MCC has actually planned to close the Roro bins facilities, but we’ve decided to continue the service for another six months.

“We want the public to know the actual situation, instead of being misled by certain parties who basically say the council is responsible to take care of everything,” said Yii, while expressing his hope for the public to work together with MCC to keep the city clean.

He also sought the public to report any illegal waste dumping to MCC with reports be made via:

  • MCC Hotline at 085-424111 on weekend (9 am – 2 pm on weekend)
  • MCC general line at 085-433501 or PCM Section 085-442411 on weekdays (8am – 5pm)
  • Miri Smart City Command Centre (MSCCC) at 085-424600 or 019-214 4600 (WhatsApp only) – 24 Hours
  • Miri Cares App or via Talikhidmat App

Additionally, Yii said MCC would still provide the Roro bins at various designated places throughout this festive season spring cleaning campaign, as well as the open truck transportation services for bulk waste disposal at a minimal cost upon request.
