MIRI (Dec 7): Thorough preparation and continuous readiness must be prioritised to safeguard the safety and well-being of the community in the face of natural disasters in the state, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato’ Sri Lee Kim Shin.

This was necessary as, despite various preventive measures, some disaster-related challenges remain beyond human control, he said when officiating at the Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (MDDMC) “Strength in Unity: A Tribute to All” appreciation dinner on Friday.

Lee, who is also the minister in charge of the MDDMC, emphasised the importance of recognising the contributions and sacrifices of personnel and community members involved in disaster response operations.

The Senadin assemblyman said 2024 and 2025 were among the most challenging periods for the Miri Division, which was hit by major floods that inundated homes, displaced hundreds of residents and damaged infrastructure, resulting in disrupted communications and access.

He also cited the landslide incident at Kampung Lereng Bukit here, which forced several families to be relocated and claimed lives.

“In these critical situations, the commitment displayed by our agencies has been remarkable. Rescue personnel and other agencies worked tirelessly, braving the floods and assisting with evacuations even at night,” he said.

Lee also expressed his appreciation to private companies that helped clean up Miri City within two to three days following the floods.

He acknowledged contributions from non-governmental organisations (NGOs), voluntary bodies and private individuals, including donations of food, blankets, four-wheel-drive vehicles, boats, clothing and volunteer manpower.

“This caring community is what we value. This is what we have in Miri. Whenever a disaster occurs, many NGOs and individuals step forward voluntarily to help,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of responder safety, citing lessons from a recent tragic incident in Hong Kong, and reminded all rescue personnel to prioritise their own safety to carry out their duties effectively and minimise risks.

With the upcoming rainy season and the possibility of flooding, Lee urged all agencies to ensure that drainage systems, roads and infrastructure are properly maintained.

Quick action, effective coordination and a strong spirit of cooperation, he said, reflect the strength of the Miri Division, adding that early preparation and continuous readiness are crucial in facing any eventuality.

The event concluded with the presentation of appreciation certificates, alongside musical performances and a lucky draw session.

Also present was Miri Resident Galong Luang.
