MIRI (July 28): The Miri City Council (MCC), in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) Miri and the Miri Division Health Office, will hold a mass rabies vaccination campaign in August. Mayor Adam Yii said the vaccination campaigns will happen across three weekends at three different locations. On Aug 9 and 10, it will be held at Tamu in Taman Tunku; Nam Leong Senadin (Aug 16 and 17); and Miri Public Park, Jalan Miri-Bintulu (Aug 23 and 24)—all from 9am-4pm. The services provided are rabies vaccinations for dogs aged three months and above; dog licensing counter; and free microchipping for licensed and vaccinated dogs on site. “Dog owners are advised to bring their identification card for registration and leash their dogs. If dogs are known to be wary of strangers or aggressive, it is encouraged to muzzle them,” he told reporters today after a full council meeting. “After the vaccination, dog owners are to quarantine and isolate their dogs for 28 days to let them build immunity against rabies. They must ensure that their dogs are kept within their home compound only.” In response to the emergence of new rabies cases, Yii issued a firm reminder to pet owners to ensure their dogs are licensed, vaccinated, and kept under control at all times. He urged the public to avoid allowing pets to roam freely in public spaces, especially without a leash or supervision, and to prevent them from mingling with stray animals. “The city council enforced a strict standard operating procedure regarding free-roaming dogs. Any unrestrained pet found on the streets will be removed and euthanised immediately. “If that happens, owners will not be able to reclaim their pets—a consequence we hope to avoid through greater public awareness and compliance,” he warned. Yii noted that one of the recent rabies cases involved a cat, and reminded cat owners to keep their felines within their house compound and in cages to ensure their safety against rabies. He also shared some advice if someone is bitten by a dog or cat, namely to wash the wound with soap and rinse under clean running tap water for at least 15 minutes and immediately seek treatment at the nearest government hospital or clinic.

MIRI (July 29): Miri City Council (MCC) will launch the parking e-compound system this Aug 18, at Marina Phase 1, as a pilot project before wider implementation across the city. According to Mayor Adam Yii, the system is a step towards digitalising parking enforcement and also supporting MCC’s Smart City goals. “With the system, it would allow compounds to be issued electronically via handheld devices and enables motorists to pay fines online – making the process faster, more transparent and more convenient. “The key benefits of the digitalised system include real-time issuance, centralised tracking, the convenience of online payments and automated reminders for defaulters. “Not only it is eco-friendly, but it also reduces operational costs, while enhancing transparency, enabling geo-tagged enforcement, and providing valuable data insights for better planning,” said Yii in a statement yesterday. The pilot project at Marina Phase 1, according to him, serves to test the system’s effectiveness before the citywide rollout. “Thus, MCC is inviting councillors and the public to witness this milestone in improving urban management and service delivery.” On the parking services, Yii said the MCC was deeply concerned about the frequent obstruction of parking spaces by unauthorised structures, objects or activities, that had been happening around the city. He said that recent site inspections by the council revealed a growing trend of obstructions. “The scenarios such as installation of illegal ramps by commercial premises, workshops and car wash operators; abandoned vehicles; placement of rubbish bins and construction debris at public parking spaces; and deliberate blockage (of parking spaces) by the shop owners using various materials or vehicles, have been constantly seen. “These practices reduce the availability of public parking and disrupt traffic flow, and also pose safety and hygiene concerns. “Public parking bays are designated for shared use, and are not to be claimed, modified or used for private purposes. “In this regard, MCC will step up enforcement efforts in dealing with repeat offenders.” Asked about the possibility of allowing business operators to pay rent to occupy parking spaces, Yii said the council is reluctant to permit such arrangements but will consider cases individually on a case-by-case basis. “We are urging full cooperation from all parties to help preserve Miri’s reputation as a well-managed and accessible city. “We encourage the public to report any obstruction of parking areas through MCC’s official complaint channels,” he added.

This year’s planting also forms part of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2025 sustainability programme, which includes initiatives such as a shuttle bus system to reduce emissions and solar-powered charging stations and lighting supported by Sarawak Energy Berhad. “Through the Rainforest World Music Festival, we are leading by example and showing what sustainable tourism can look like in action,” he concluded.

MIRI (July 22): Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg says the upcoming Miri Marina Bridge will be a game changer for the city, comparing its future appeal to the “San Francisco of Sarawak”. He said the RM450 million project will not only offer scenic views of the South China Sea and surrounding Canada and Lambir hills, but also drastically cut travel time between Pulau Melayu and the Marina area from 30 minutes to just five. “This landscape upgrade in Miri, with its iconic facilities and connectivity infrastructure, aligns with the city’s image as the resort city of northern Sarawak, putting it on par with other tourist destinations,” Abang Johari said at the groundbreaking ceremony at the Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre today. The two-lane cable-stayed bridge will span 650 metres with a 1.2km total length and 20-metre clearance. Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year and would take 36 months to complete. Abang Johari said Sarawak’s infrastructure growth is part of its long-term economic plan, which has attracted global recognition, including from the World Economic Forum and World Bank. He said Sarawak’s revenue reached RM14.6 billion last year, and the state now aims to hit RM300 billion in GDP within 10 years, building on its gas development roadmap. “Our GDP is now touching RM199 billion from RM140 billion previously. Over the next five years, a RM280 billion target is achievable provided there is political stability and the people of Sarawak remain united,” he said. The Miri Marina Bridge project also supports broader plans to connect Miri with key sites such as the planned Beraya township and Unesco sites in Niah and Mulu, along with improved road links to Marudi, Long Terawan, Bukit Buda and Lawas. Power supply in the region will also be upgraded from 275kV to 500kV to meet growing demand. One of the main highlights is the final round of ‘The Face M.O Sarawak – Cycle 9’, where 10 finalists from across Sarawak will compete for the title. The competition is aimed at discovering fresh faces and nurturing confidence among young talents, while offering them exposure within the modelling and entertainment industries. In addition to its entertainment value, the Gala remains committed to promoting traditional Sarawakian elements, such as the ‘pua kumbu’, ethnic dances, and indigenous music and customs. These components are integrated into the evening’s programme to reflect the state’s cultural richness and to inspire greater appreciation among the younger generation. Chairman of Persatuan Bakat Dayak Sarikei and The Gala M.O Sarawak 2025, Asat Nawin, expressed hope that the event will continue to position Miri as a destination for cultural tourism. “The Gala is more than just a glamorous event. It is a platform to elevate local talent while preserving our cultural heritage,” he said. Also present was The Gala M.O Sarawak 2025 co-founder Augtine Das Basih.

MIRI (July 3): In a proactive move to boost local tourism and promote smart mobility, Miri Deputy Mayor Ariffin Mohamad led the Miri City Council (MCC) Tourism Development Committee on an exploratory ride aboard the city’s Smart Bus to Senadin on Tuesday. The initiative, dubbed the ‘Exciting Trip with Smart Buses’, is part of MCC’s broader commitment to developing sustainable and community-focused tourism under the Miri Smart City programme. The journey provided the committee with an opportunity to assess on-the-ground issues affecting residents, including clogged drains and garbage accumulation, while simultaneously identifying tourism potential within the Senadin area. The group boarded the Smart Bus from the city centre and travelled to northern Senadin, making observations on infrastructure and areas in need of improvement. On the return trip, the delegation visited the Miri Visitors Information Centre located next to the city bus terminal. A key highlight of the visit was a discussion with officials from the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), focusing on strengthening collaboration to promote rural tourism and improve service quality across Miri’s lesser-known destinations. “The MCC Tourism Development Committee will compile a detailed report based on this visit, with actionable recommendations to support tourism development in Miri,” said Ariffin. He added that the initiative complements similar site visits conducted previously, including one to the Pujut area, as part of ongoing efforts to evaluate local environmental and tourism potential. The programme is also part of the Miri City Bus Joy Ride campaign, an initiative spearheaded by MCC’s Tourism Development Standing Committee to encourage the use of public transport equipped with smart technologies. The Smart Bus route, which spans from Pelita Tunku to Senadin and back, takes approximately one hour for a round trip and features several convenient stops for the public. Residents are encouraged to embrace this modern mode of travel and explore Miri’s growing range of smart services by downloading the Sarawak Smart City App, available on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The initiative reinforces Miri’s ambition to become a leading smart city in Sarawak, integrating technology, sustainability, and community well-being into everyday urban life while revitalising its tourism economy.

Berita Asal Dalam Bahasa Inggeris MIRI (June 25): The Sarawak government is calling on divisional tourism committees to work closely with local communities to identify and map out historical sites to be preserved and promoted as tourist attractions. State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting, said the ministry will support these efforts through the divisional tourism committees by providing funding and tourism product development. “In Miri and its hinterlands, there is a wealth of history, and I believe the same goes for other divisions in Sarawak. Every town in Sarawak has its stories ― of rivers, markets, communities, and dreams,” he said when officiating the launch of Miri Heritage Trail here today. Ting said the local communities possess valuable knowledge of historical sites in their areas, and the ministry, together with the divisional authorities, can assist in preserving and promoting these legacies. The Miri Heritage Trail pamphlet retraces the footsteps of the city’s past and aims to guide its future development with pride and purpose, representing a collective community effort to preserve local heritage. Ting said the trail is more than just a map of historical sites ― it is a journey through time, from the earliest known mention of ‘Maraboo’ (Miri in 1791) to its transformation into Malaysia’s first oil town. “Miri’s social history was shaped during the Brooke era and strengthened by communities such as the Jatti Miriek, Kedayan, Kenyah, Kayan, and others. Though the city’s history was scarred by wartime struggles, it was never broken,” he added. Among the featured sites on the trail are Japanese Landing Craft War Memorial at Brighton Beach, lighthouse at Pusara Metali, The Grand Old Lady, Salome Dam, World War II Air Raid Shelter (Canada Hill), Bunkers Batu 1 (Kuala Baram road), Dato Permaisuri’s Tomb (Tanjung Batu), WWII POW and Execution Camp (Lopeng), WWII Memorial Park, and Piasau Bailey Bridge. The ministry, in collaboration with local ethnic associations, history groups, and local authorities, developed the Miri Heritage Trail as part of efforts to preserve the city’s legacy. The Miri History Group, made up of local history enthusiasts, played a key role in igniting interest in documenting these historical places, with a significant social media following backing the initiative. Meanwhile, Ting said the ministry will continue working with partners to ensure the trail is developed into a marketable tourism product, contributing to Sarawak’s broader heritage tourism offerings. Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chairman Datuk Dennis Ngau expressed optimism that many historical places across Sarawak ― including those in Baram basin ― could be developed into tourism products with the concerted efforts of all stakeholders. Also present at the event were Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datu Sherinna Hussaini; State Deputy Minister of Public Health, Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil; Miri District Officer Siti Rohanie Yusof; Miri Deputy Secretary Petrick Linggie Taboh; and community leaders.
