MIRI, April 29: Landlords or occupants of old and outdated buildings in Miri City must repaint and repair the premises or else, they will have to face the music. Miri City Council (MCC) Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said as an effort to promote Miri City as a choice destination for business, tourism and residency by the year 2030, safety and aesthetics are very important. “We will see buildings of all types with exterior surfaces which have been sorely neglected. They look old or outdated with paint on the building fading, mold growth, water damage, cracks and holes. “Some buildings may be empty with absent landlords, whilst others though occupied, don’t get repainted, usually due to costs. “They may be focussing all their efforts on the inside of the premises to make the venue more attractive and appealing to potential customers. Unfortunately, if left unrepaired and repainted, the exterior can deteriorate so badly they could cost a small fortune to repair,” he said in a statement today. He further said MCC will be issuing notices to landlords or occupants requiring the repainting and repairs of their premises in such neglected conditions within the period specified in the notice and to execute such works and do such things as are necessary for that purpose. “It is an offence under By-Laws 24 of The Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-Laws, 1999 and By-Laws 21 Part IV of Building By-Laws, 1994 (if the landlord) without reasonable cause, fails or refuses to comply with the requirements of the notice within the time specified therein shall be guilty of an offence, and shall on conviction be liable to a fine of RM500 and a further fine of RM100 for each day after conviction until the order is complied with. “The council may in its opinion (if) the circumstances so warrant, take measures or works required to repaint the building to acceptable standard and recover all expenses thereof from the owner or occupier who make defaults to comply with the requirements of the notice within the time specified therein,” he added. — DayakDaily
