MIRI: Sarawak’s Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, has praised the Miri Division Hopoh Association for its dedication to cultural preservation and social development.
Speaking at the association’s Chinese New Year luncheon and installation ceremony for its new committee today, Lee highlighted the organisation’s vital role in uniting the Hopoh community and fostering cultural identity.
He expressed his appreciation for the association’s efforts in maintaining and promoting Hopoh heritage, particularly through the establishment of the Miri Hopoh Cultural Museum.
He described the museum as a significant achievement in preserving the history and contributions of early Hopoh settlers in Sarawak, ensuring younger generations remain connected to their roots.
“Culture is the soul of a community and a crucial link in fostering social unity.
“Sarawak’s multiculturalism is a strength we must cherish, and the State Government strongly supports initiatives that preserve and promote cultural heritage,” he said.
Lee also emphasised the evolving role of clan associations, stating that their responsibilities now extend beyond traditional community networking to actively contributing towards economic and social progress.
He commended the Miri Division Hopoh Association for its engagement in education, social welfare, and business development, citing the association’s ‘Membership Achievement Awards’ as a testament to its commitment towards supporting and encouraging its members.
Congratulating the newly installed leadership, Lee expressed confidence in their ability to carry forward the association’s legacy while modernising its operations.
He encouraged the youth and women’s divisions to harness their energy and creativity to propel the association towards a more dynamic and influential future.
“I believe that under the guidance of the new leadership, the association will continue to uphold its strong traditions, foster unity, and advance to greater heights,” he said.
