MIRI (Aug 26): Miri City Council (MCC) has announced that all seasonal fruit vendors will be required sell their products only at the temporary hawker centre at Pujut Corner beginning Sept 1. In a statement yesterday, MCC said that the centre—formerly the Pujut Bus Terminal—has been designated as the venue for seasonal fruit vendors. “Therefore, all seasonal fruit vendors are required to apply for a permit at Level 1, Public Health and Licensing Section, beginning Aug 25. Sales at unauthorised locations will no longer be permitted,” it added. The council explained that the move aims to ensure cleanliness, safety and proper regulation of public areas, as many vendors had previously occupied car parks, walkways, bus stops, and back alleys without permits—disrupting public safety and tarnishing the city’s image. “The council’s Enforcement Section has conducted monitoring around the city to warn all seasonal fruit sellers, especially durian vendors, to obtain permits from the city council before operating, and to trade only at approved sites. “This monitoring and enforcement are fully carried out by the Enforcement Section of Miri City Council,” it said. The council said that advisory services have been provided to traders, urging them to maintain cleanliness and strictly avoid placing business or personal items in public areas. “Should any traders continue to fail to comply with existing regulations or operate without a permit, confiscation will be carried out in the future,” it said.

MIRI (Aug 26): Those who have yet settle their outstanding parking compounds are urged to clear them, or risk facing legal action. This was stressed by Mayor Adam Yii when met by the reporters after chairing Miri City Council (MCC)’s monthly meeting that the Miri City Council (MCC) is considering legal action against defaulters of parking compounds. “There are still a significant number of outstanding parking compounds that remain unpaid, and they have accumulated over the years and affected the council’s efforts in improving public services and facilities. “Therefore, to ensure fairness and accountability, MCC strongly urges all vehicle owners with outstanding parking compounds to settle their dues immediately. “Those who fail to clear their outstanding compounds may face legal action, including being brought to court,” said Yii during the media briefing. He advised those unsure of their status to check via Borneo Park Miri mobile application, or by contacting Borneo Parking System Sdn Bhd on 085-418 743, for further assistance and enquiries. Yii also reminded all that no discount, reduction or amnesty would be granted for any case of outstanding parking compounds. “The persistent defaulters may risk having their details submitted to Credit Tip-Off Service (CTOS) and that once blacklisted, this may affect an individual’s ability to apply for bank loans, credit cards, and other financial facilities in the future.” The initiative of classifying and registering parking compound defaulters in the CTOS system was taken by the MCC as one of the effort to push them to settle their compounds. “So far, the number of those who have paid the outstanding amounts has been quite encouraging,” said Yiis.

MIRI (Aug 23): This month’s ‘Miri City Car-Free Day’ was transformed into a lively carnival as local communities of all ages came together to celebrate sustainability, culture and community spirit. Adding a vibrant twist to the event was its colourful theme, ‘Kain Pelikat, Orang Kampung Kita’, where participants proudly donned traditional ‘sarongs’, displaying their cultural pride. In his opening remarks, Mayor Adam Yii emphasised that the event was about more than just closing roads to traffic — it was a celebration of culture and unity. “Miri City Car-Free Day is even more colourful as we celebrate it with the ‘kain pelikat’ theme. The kain pelikat is more than just clothing — it is a symbol of simplicity, tradition, and unity. “It reminds us that sustainability also means valuing our culture, honouring our roots, and celebrating the things that bring us together as Malaysians.” Yii also highlighted the broader goals of the Car-Free Day initiative, which focuses on opening streets for people to walk, cycle, run, and enjoy time outdoors with family and friends. “It is about creating safe spaces where children can play freely, where neighbours can connect, and where everyone can enjoy fresher, cleaner air,” he said. He further noted that the initiative supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing); SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The event also featured traditional games, including ‘melastik tradisional’ (traditional slingshot), ‘memanah tradisional’ (traditional archery), and other heritage activities aimed at reviving the joy of ‘sukan rakyat’ (people’s game). “These games are not only fun — they help preserve our local heritage and show that fitness, culture, and community spirit can go hand in hand,” Yii added. The half-day event was held at Miri City Hall, with Jalan Bandaraya and Jalan Marina Utama closed to traffic from 7am to 11.30am.

MIRI (Aug 11): The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Literacy Programme 2025, held at Kompleks Islam Sarawak here yesterday, concluded on a high note with over 60 participants in attendance. The one-day event was jointly organised by the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) Pujut branch in collaboration with the Saberkas Science, Technology and Innovation Subcommittee. Being the first AI literacy initiative of its kind, the programme featured presentations of five working papers. The event was officially closed by Miri mayor and Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii, who represented Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and Saberkas president Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. In his address, Yii emphasised the consequences of irresponsible artificial intelligence (AI) use among students, noting the increasing reliance on AI tools such as ChatGPT for completing assignments and examinations without genuine understanding. “Success gained without effort is short-lived,” said Yii. “If students simply copy and paste AI-generated answers without verifying them, they risk losing the critical thinking skills needed in the real world,” he cautioned. Yii stressed that AI should be used to enhance learning, not as a shortcut to bypass effort, warning that such habits could result in graduates lacking essential knowledge and skills. He also highlighted Sarawak’s ambition to become a regional leader in AI adoption, including the establishment of the Sarawak AI Centre to spearhead initiatives across various sectors. “Use AI for good, and deepen your knowledge so that we are not swayed by irresponsible use of technology,” he urged, calling on participants to share their knowledge with others in support of Sarawak’s goal of embedding AI literacy in everyday life while avoiding misuse.

MIRI (Aug 10): A total of 1,182 dogs here have been vaccinated against rabies in the first seven months of this year, said Transport minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. He said that of this figure, only 93 dogs were licensed by the Miri City Council (MCC). “This figure does not include dogs vaccinated or licensed during yesterday’s (Aug 9) vaccination and licensing programme held here,” he said when visiting the vaccination site at Taman Tunku here on Sunday. During the programme yesterday, 193 dogs were vaccinated against rabies while 44 had their MCC licences renewed or newly issued. Lee said that while Miri has been rabies-free for the past several years, the public must not be complacent and continue to fulfil their responsibility by ensuring their dogs, and even cats, receive annual rabies vaccinations. He stressed the rabies vaccination must be renewed every year, and that it is free-of-charge for dogs at the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Miri. “I urge Mirians to bring their dogs for vaccination. The protection lasts for one year. “We want everyone’s cooperation to keep Miri rabies-free. Indeed, Miri has been one of the rabies-free divisions for the past several years and we want to maintain that status,” he said. Lee said he was informed that since Jan this year, there have been 800 cases of dog bites reported in Miri. He said thus, Mirians must remain vigilant, and those bitten by dogs must immediately seek treatment at a clinic or hospital. On the programme, Lee commended the mobile vaccination team, which makes it easier for dog owners to bring their pets for the vaccination. “This has been an ongoing effort by the DVS Miri for several years and I thank them for their dedication. I hope that with the mobile team in place, more dog owners will be encouraged to come forward and get their pets vaccinated,” he added.

The flag-off at the college was performed by deputy mayor Councillor Ariffin Mohamad, who represented Deputy Health Minister Dato Lukanisman Awang Sauni. In his speech, kanisman said the event was more than just a sports or recreational activity, as it carried an important message of unity, cooperation, and healthy living – all vital in building a harmonious nation. “Through activities such as the ‘Cakap Baik-Baik’ campaign, the programme, and initiatives with the ‘Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (Neighbourhood Watch), we aim to strengthen community bonds. “Every stop along is an opportunity to foster closer ties and build bridges of understanding between communities,” said Lukanisman, the MP for Sibuti. The convoy also meant to promote healthy lifestyles through activities including ‘Wellness on Wheels’, health talks, medical screenings, and distribution of personal hygiene kits. “A healthy population is the foundation of a strong and prosperous nation,” added Lukanisman in the speech, read out by Ariffin. MIRI (Aug 16): Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii has reaffirmed that Sarawak’s control over its oil and gas resources is rooted in historical fact, legal rights and state dignity, stressing that the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA) cannot override Sarawak’s own oil laws. In a statement, Yii has expressed firm support for Senator Ahmad Ibrahim’s assertion that the PDA does not supersede the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958 (OMO), which remains valid and enforceable in Sarawak. According to the Miri Mayor, Sarawak’s rights in this sector are not federal concessions, but legacy entitlements grounded in the state’s legal and historical foundations. “Sarawak began oil extractions in Miri in 1910, decades before Malaysia was formed in 1963. “The OMO, enacted by the British colonial administration, remains in force and is protected under Section 73 of the Malaysia Act 1963.” Yii added that any attempt to disregard or downplay these rights would constitute a serious affront to Sarawak’s sovereignty. Yii described as ‘highly misleading’ a recent statement in Parliament by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Law and Institutional Reform, who claimed that Petronas’ powers under the PDA extended to Sarawak “Such statements risk creating public misunderstanding and falsely suggest that Sarawak has compromised its longstanding position,” he said. Yii highlighted Sarawak’s significant progress in asserting its rights through legislative and legal means. In 2016, the Sarawak government passed the Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO), officially recognising Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) as the sole gas aggregator in the state. In 2020, the High Court ruled in favour of Sarawak’s right to impose a sales tax on petroleum products, forcing Petronas to pay outstanding dues to the state. “These were not acts of generosity from the federal government. They were rights that Sarawak fought for and won through the courts and legislative reforms,” stressed Yii. He also called upon all political parties and leaders in Sarawak to adopt a united stance in defending the state’s rights, and to reject any attempts to undermine it. “This matter is not merely economic, but one of dignity, legal autonomy, and the spirit enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), which forms the basis of Sarawak’s participation in the Malaysian federation. “SUPP will never yield. We will continue to defend Sarawak’s rights at the negotiating table, in Parliament, and in the court of public opinion. “Sarawak’s oil and gas resources belong to Sarawakians. That is an indisputable historical fact and a right protected by law.”

MIRI (Aug 18): The Miri City Council (MCC) has launched the e-Compound system, the first of its kind in Sarawak, aimed at providing faster, more convenient and more transparent parking services for Mirians. According to Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii, the system enables the council’s parking officers to issue notices instantly using handheld devices, with the information recorded securely in the central system in real time. “This means faster services, eco-green-friendlier, and more accuracy,” he told reporters after officiating at the launch of the system at Miri Marina Phase 2 today. He said the pilot project will kick off at Marina Phase 1 and Phase 2, two high-traffic areas expected to significantly benefitted from the new system. “Once the system is refined in these two areas, it will be expanded to more areas across the city. “If you receive a parking notice, you can verify and pay it easily via our official mobile app, the ‘Borneo Park Miri’. “This gives motorists the flexibility to handle their parking matters anytime, anywhere, without the need to queue at the parking booth counters.” Yii assured the public and visitors alike that had always MCC prioritised transparency and security. “We know that in this digital era, public trust and security are essential. “That is why every official parking e-compound notice will include MCC official logo, compound number, vehicle number as well as the model of the vehicle. “The notice will also show the exact timestamp and location details for full transparency and at the same time, it will also state specific type of offence committed, as defined under The Road Transport (Provision of Parking Places) (Miri City Council) Order, 2006,” said the mayor. Also present were deputy mayor Ariffin Mohamad, MCC acting chief secretary Abdul Rahman Taupek, chairman of city’s infrastructure standing committee Councillor Leslie Lau, MCC Parking sub-committee head Councillor Lisa Yu, as well as Borneo Parking System (BPS) Sdn Bhd manager Au Yong Kien Mun.

MIRI (Aug 18): Youths should consider joining non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as the Junior Chamber International (JCI) to cultivate positive values, leadership qualities, and contribute to nation-building, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. Lee said society today needs more young people who can propose solutions and drive constructive progress, rather than those who only criticise and create problems. “JCI is an international organisation that promotes positive change. They want to develop our young people into future leaders so that we will have a better world and a better future,” said Lee. “This is why I say JCI is a very good youth organisation, and I would like to call on more youths to be part of it,” he said during a dinner announcing the Top 30 finalists for the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Awards at a hotel here on Saturday. Lee, who is also a JCI Senator, stressed that the first step towards creating positive change is cultivating a positive mindset. He added that youths are the future leaders of the country, and it is vital that they are empowered with positive values and constructive thinking to drive change in various aspects of society. Lee also noted that the TOYM Awards not only recognise individual achievements but also celebrate the wider impact these young leaders have on the community and the nation. “TOYM adopts internationally recognised nomination and selection systems, giving young people the chance to build global networks, exchange ideas with outstanding achievers, and represent Malaysia on the world stage,” he said. “Tonight, we are honouring not only the personal successes of our 30 finalists but also their contributions to society in various fields.” He also reminded the finalists that being part of TOYM opens doors to international exposure and opportunities. “Young leaders should look beyond Malaysia and think globally. With rapid technological advancement and the rise of artificial intelligence, we must keep pace with global trends and challenges,” he added. Meanwhile, organising chairlady Candy Yong said this year’s TOYM received more than 100 nominations from various fields, reflecting strong encouragement from youths nationwide. The final Top 10 winners will be announced at a gala event at Pullman Hotel Miri on Sept 19. Present at the dinner were Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii; Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief, Councillor Leslie Lau; JCI Malaysia National president Tan Wei Jian; and JCI Miri president Sam Yong.

MIRI: Sarawak’s young people have been urged to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool for innovation and progress, while avoiding the temptation to misuse it in education and daily life. The call came from Saberkas president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is also Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts as well as Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang on Saturday. He was speaking at the closing of the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Programme for Saberkas’ Northern Zone branch, organised by the Saberkas Sarawak Science, Technology and Innovation sub-committee. The event drew 60 participants, including Saberkas members and youth association representatives, with five papers presented. Abdul Karim said the initiative, a first for Saberkas, reflected the organisation’s commitment to building AI awareness among young people. “We hope the presentations will benefit everyone here, especially our organising committee and the Pujut branch, who partnered with our Science, Technology and Innovation sub-committee to make this programme a success,” he said. Abdul Karim highlighted Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision to position the state as a regional hub for AI research and development. Through strategic collaboration with academic institutions, industry leaders and government agencies, the Sarawak AI Centre is creating a dynamic AI ecosystem. Among its flagship projects is AI for Smart Agriculture, which applies AI-powered data analytics to boost crop yields and promote sustainable farming. Other initiatives include predictive analytics in healthcare for early disease detection and AI-driven smart grids to enhance energy efficiency. To sustain growth, the state has launched AI talent development programmes, formed a dedicated AI unit within the public service, and established an AI data centre to strengthen government capacity. Sarawak also recently introduced KETEQ AI, a significant milestone under its Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030, which aims to position the state as a high-tech hub in Southeast Asia. Abdul Karim said the government was committed not only to excellence but to achieving global recognition in innovation, technological advancement and sustainable growth – all underpinned by strong data governance and a secure digital environment to protect system integrity and privacy. While AI offers unprecedented opportunities, he warned of the risks of irresponsible use, particularly among students. Initially welcomed as a learning aid, tools such as ChatGPT are increasingly being misused, especially during exam periods. “If assignments or exam questions are answered wholesale by AI, what are students truly learning?” he asked. Reports suggest some students now copy and paste AI-generated answers without verifying their accuracy, raising concerns over academic integrity and the dilution of critical thinking skills. Abdul Karim cautioned that if the trend continues, Malaysia could end up producing “paper graduates” – individuals who appear competent on certificates but lack real knowledge or skills. He stressed that the goal was not to restrict technology, but to ensure it is used correctly – as a learning aid, not a shortcut to instant success. “The truth is, knowledge gained too easily is also easily forgotten,” he said.
